This white paper, created by the American Vein & Lymphatic Society, reflects the evidence-based recommendations in the Gloviczki paper as well as many other current studies. Other recommendations, where the evidence-based research is sparse yet the therapy is considered standard of care, are based on the AVLS consensus of experts.

The AVLS has developed guidelines for management of obstruction of the femoroiliocaval venous system. The guidelines, which are available to all of our members, describe minimum standards for treatment protocols.
The recommendations in the document are based on a literature review by a working group of the AVLS Guidelines Committee.

The AVLS has developed guidelines for lower extremity ultrasound venous imaging. The guidelines, which are available to all of our members, describe minimum standards for imaging protocols and reporting as well as the necessary qualifications for those individuals performing and interpreting these studies. The accuracy of the non-invasive venous study depends on the knowledge, skills and experience of the technologist or physician performing the studies and the physician interpreting the studies.

In May 2013, representatives of sixteen organizations came together to begin the process of revising the existing Scope of Practice and Clinical Practice Standards. The collaborative process and exchange of ideas has led to this document, which is reflective of the current community standard of care. The purpose of this document is to define the scope of practice and clinical standards for diagnostic medical sonographers and describe their role as members of the healthcare team.

A safety checklist is a type of standardization proven to help improve patient care and avoid human error. It allows practitioners to break down complex procedures, detect potential errors before they lead to harm and proceed knowing all necessary prior steps have been completed.
As the World Health Organization notes, “Human error in the complex world of modern medicine is inevitable. Harm to patients as the result of these errors is not.”
AVLS members and Leadership Academy participants, Felipe Collares, MD and Mehru Sonde, MD, FACP, have developed a phlebology specific checklist for AVLS members to use in their daily practice. The Assessment, Care, Plan, or AVLS Checklist, walks practitioners through each step of the process from evaluation to post-procedure planning.
